Russell Smith, Pastor

Russell Smith has been pastor of Covenant-First Presbyterian since 2001.  He and his wife Tammy have two daughters, Sarah Grace and Annalise.  When he is not attending swim meets or musical events in support of his children, Russell enjoys good books, good conversations, and good food.  He participates in the occasional 5k race, though his pace is more “fast shuffle” than “running.”

Russell has written two books:  Prophet of the Sun, an action adventure novel, and Geneva Two, a fictional reflection on Christian community and calling.   He blogs about faith and life at russellbsmith.com and he’s active on Twitter and Instagram under the handle @possiblehorizon.

Russell holds degrees from Wake Forest University (BA in English Literature), Reformed Theological Seminary (MDiv) and The University of Stellenbosch (MPhil in Ancient Cultures).  He also participated in a summerlong Medieval Studies at Oxford University.

The focus of Russell’s ministry is to encourage the saints to grow in their grasp of God’s grace, which saves us and also sends us.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.  (I Peter 2:9-10)
